Bilibili Launches Global App to Challenge YouTube

-

Bilibili, China’s largest video platform, is poised to acquire international creators in an attempt to rival YouTube beyond China.

Bilibili has reignited its global ambitions with the launch of a new mobile application for international markets. The company has also removed strict identity verification requirements that have often hindered global users from accessing its content.

The global version of the Bilibili app is now available on Android, with an iOS version expected soon. Furthermore, the company is reportedly developing an English-language website to showcase content from popular creators.

New job postings on LinkedIn and marketing materials distributed to influencers indicate that the company has begun hiring in the US, Europe, Japan, and other key markets.

According to the job postings, Bilibili is recruiting Community Managers in Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul, and Tokyo. Another job posting in Singapore indicates the company is developing an AI-powered content moderation system for its international platform.

In a post on a newly created account (Account X), Bilibili confirmed its plans for international expansion but did not disclose a timeline for the official launch. In another post, the company stated that both the Chinese and global versions will offer the same content. However, it states that the global version will be “better localized and easier to register” for international users.

The global version of the Bilibili app uses a pink color scheme, with a small globe icon in the upper left corner of the app icon to distinguish it from the Chinese version.

As part of its global expansion plans, Bilibili has encouraged popular global influencers, including MrBeast, to upload their content to its existing Chinese-language platform, which the company says has over 376 million monthly active users.

The company has taken several steps to make the platform more accessible to international visitors. First, it quietly eliminated the identity verification process that required users to present passports or identification documents to upload content.

According to Semafor, Bilibili has created a Discord server to market its international platform as an opportunity for creators and influencers to earn extra income. The company has also shared documentation with creators worldwide, describing the platform as the perfect place to connect with “affordable and well-educated Gen Z users.”
